How buying through Kriptomat works from the region

1. Opening an account and identity verification. You need an ID card or passport and a selfie. Verification usually takes anywhere from a few minutes to one working day, and at Kriptomat it is mandatory, as they operate under a European licence.
2. Depositing money. Kriptomat does not accept dinars, marks or denars — the money arrives in euros, by transfer from a foreign-currency account or by card. For a SEPA deposit they charge €1 per transaction.
3. Buying. Instant one-click buying costs 1.49%.
4. Withdrawing to your own wallet. Not required, but crypto sitting on an exchange is not in your hands. Exchanges charge a network fee for withdrawal, and it depends on network congestion, not on the exchange.

The steps are the same at most European exchanges. What differs is the fees, which currencies they accept, and how long verification takes.

What to check before you send money

• Whether your bank allows a transfer to an exchange. Some banks in the region refuse payments to crypto exchanges without prior notice. Ask before you send the money.
• The rate your bank applies. If you pay by card in dinars, the bank converts at its own rate — which is not the official one and can be worse than you expect. It does not show up in the exchange fee.
• The spread. The gap between the price an exchange sells at and the one it buys back at. It is not itemised on any receipt, but you pay it, and it can be larger than the fee.
• The reference number. On a SEPA deposit, the detail that links the money to your account. Get it wrong and the money comes back — or takes a long time to find.
